Bhai Dooj 2019: Fun activities for kids to celebrate the day

Bhai Dooj 2019: This year, encourage your kids to make their own DIY gifts for their siblings instead of buying them. Kids can make DIY cards or jewellery, among other things for their beloved brother or sister.

Bhai Dooj celebrates the special bond between a brother and sister. The sister puts ’tilak’ or ‘teeka’ on the brother’s forehead and prays for his long life. That’s not all. Here are some other activities that you can involve your kids in to enjoy the festival.

1. This year, encourage your kids to make their own DIY gifts for their siblings instead of buying them. Kids can make DIY cards or jewellery, among other things for their beloved brother or sister.

2. While celebrating the day, explain to your child the significance of the festival and the myths associated with it. According to Hindu mythology, it is Yamraj, God of Death, who visited sister Yami on this day, who applied ’tilak’ on his forehead and gave him sweets. Another legend says Lord Krishna also visited sister Subhadra on this day. As you go ahead with the rituals, explain to kids why you are doing them.

3. On this occasion, spend some quality time with kids by watching movies together or reading books on brother-sister bonding.

4. No festival is complete without enjoying delicacies with your family. This is the perfect time to get your kids to help you make some yummy dishes that they can have with their siblings.

5. You can also organise games for the kids like musical chairs, board games or dumb charades. Even adults can participate to motivate the little ones.

6. If your little one is a single child and does not have cousins around either, make sure he or she does not feel left out. You can take them out to their favourite place and treat them to their favourite food on this day.
