TV Shows That Get Single Motherhood Right

My daughter is my world, and I can’t imagine my life without her. I didn’t plan to be a single mother, but sometimes, life dishes out circumstances you don’t expect. Single motherhood has made me wiser, stronger and more resilient; my daughter is my child first and foremost, but she is also one of my best friends.

But that doesn’t mean it’s not difficult. In fact, being a single mom is the most isolating, tiring and difficult thing I’ve ever done. And I’m not alone: In 2016, census data showed that 1 in 4 children under the age of 18 is being raised without a father.

But this is not the reality reflected back to us via film and TV. Instead, the majority of shows and movies we see depict nuclear family stereotypes; this serves to further marginalize single mothers and our families by ensuring that the majority of TV viewers have no idea what single motherhood is like. It also makes us single moms feel like we can never measure up to "normal."

That’s why we need more of our stories on screens. When I watch shows that are realistic depictions of what single motherhood is truly like, it’s so inspiring — especially when they’re shows I can enjoy watching with my daughter.

Here are five shows we need more of.
