Adorable and unique ideas for your baby’s very first Halloween costume
When you’re a baby, your “first” everything is magical. Easter, Christmas, turning one year old — all has the glow of the new, and the miraculous, about it. And Halloween is no exception.
As far as baby’s first Halloween costume goes, all the usual endearing ideas abound. You can find baby bees and baby devils; baby angels and baby rabbits; baby bears and baby kitties. And all of these get-ups are always an adorable pleasure to see. But what if you’re looking for a costume that really stands out from the crowd, and that’s as unique as your baby’s first Halloween itself ought to be?
The below ideas range from the merely clever to the downright eccentric, but originality is always a great thing, whatever it entails. Your baby may be too young for trick-or-treating, but he or she will definitely be the cutest (and most memorable) eye candy on the block — if you can manage to pull these concepts off.
Baby as Rapunzel and parent as a tower
“Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let down your hair,” is a familiar fairytale chant. So why not make this classic tale into a wonderfully inventive costume? This idea comes to us from Megan, a mom who submitted her DIY project on Costume Works, and it’s both ingenious and easy to make.
As Megan explains, because her daughter was so small, she wanted to “incorporate dad” into the get-up, since he would be the one toting baby around all night. After painting bricks and tower like vines on dad’s pants, Megan fashioned dad’s hat (or a “roof”) from construction paper cut to look like shingles.
Though Megan sewed her daughter’s Rapunzel wig out of yellow yarn herself, any blonde (and correctly sized) wig would likely work for this costume. Then you need a princessy-looking baby gown, a baby carrier, and viola! You’re basically a walking storybook. With an adorable little princess as the star of the show. Just make sure your little Rapunzel’s hair isn’t long enough for you to trip over.
Baby as a spider and parent as a web
Halloween is definitely the time for dusty old cobwebs and delightfully haunted houses. But when you have a newborn, why not just be a new spun web, with an adorable little spider at its core? You can fashion your web from netting, and baby spider costumes, themselves, are plentiful.
Even if you can’t manage to locate something exactly like the garb depicted in this photo, you can certainly rig something similar up. And your little spider will be sure to draw your fellow Halloween revelers into a veritable “web” of intrigue.
If you want to get really creative, you can even Velcro various items to your web that got “stuck” — think fake flies. But it’ll be your little arachnid who will really be the centerpiece, and your fellow Halloween partygoers will practically be climbing the walls (get it?) with delight.
Maleficent and baby Aurora
When Disney released 2014’s Maleficent, starring Angelina Jolie, it was a major hit, and introduced the world to a brand new variation on Sleeping Beauty. Spoiler: in this version, Maleficent eventually learns to love little baby Aurora, and becomes a mother of sorts to her. That’s one reason why this is the perfect mother-baby daughter costume for Halloween.
The other reason, of course, is that Maleficent, with her black-horned headdress, vampire-like black gowns, pale skin, and dramatic dark red lipstick, is positively made for Halloween. Baby Aurora, on the other hand, is like a ray of vampire-blinding sunlight. But that, as they say, is the way the story goes.
Plus, Aurora’s costume as a baby is simple and comfy. And if your baby sleeps through the whole Halloween party? Well, she is supposed to be a sleeping beauty, after all. So in a way, the slumber actually kind of completes the costume.
Baby Pubert from Addams Family Values
Since little Pubert Addams of Addams Family Values (so named for his untimely mustache) was actually played by twin girls, this darkly whimsical costume works well for any baby. Bonus if the parents can go as Gomez and Morticia and siblings as Wednesday and Pugsley Addams — but that’s not a necessity if you don’t have the requisite cast of characters. Ideally at least mom will go as Morticia, though — there are plenty of slinky black dresses and darkly cinematic makeup out there.
Adorable little Pubert’s alabaster skin can be easily achieved with a bit of white Halloween makeup. His mustache can be easily drawn on, too — though he might rub it off by the end of the night, being a baby and all. And a lacy, antique-looking bonnet, complete with spider-adorned garb, ought to be relatively easy to locate. If your little Pubert does come with siblings, though, just be sure to keep those sibling rivalry-related Halloween pranks in check.
Baby Toby from Labyrinth
Yes, it came out in the 1980s. But the fantasy film Labyrinth starring the late and marvelous David Bowie, a young Jennifer Connelly, and the unforgettable baby Toby, is still considered a cult classic. Besides, there are many 80s kids (now adults, with babies themselves) who grew up watching little Toby in his red and white striped pajamas. So what could be an easier — and more iconic — costume than the one “the babe with the power” himself sported?
All you need for a convincing baby Toby costume is a red and white striped sleeper, which is easy to find. And if dad could manage to pull off “Goblin King” Bowie’s epic hair and outfit, that would be even better. Mom (or maybe even an older sister?) could go as Toby’s teenage sibling Sarah, all decked out in her white ballgown. It would all make quite the impression, with the look pulled together thanks to your adorable baby in his or her candy-cane PJs.
A "family tree" or an apple that doesn't fall far from the tree
A “family tree” may very well be the perfect Halloween costume for the entire kin. And when you throw in the old adage that “the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree,” the whole idea becomes even more fitting. Just think: the whole family could order tree costumes, and essentially go as “branches” of each other. Hey, you could even include grandma and grandpa, if they felt up to walking around trick-or-treating or going to a Halloween party.
Or, if you prefer, you could just dress baby as an apple, and everyone else could go as the tree — which baby fell from. It’s a concept that works for everyone. And if you happen to find yourself at one of those old-fashioned Halloween parties where bobbing for apples are all part of the fun, look at it this way: you’ll already be one step ahead of the game.
A lobster baby with a lobster trap-decorated crib
The idea of your baby being a lobster in a trap might sound a little morbid on the surface, but hey — Halloween is a little bit morbid! In the best (and most festive) of ways, that is. Granted, the lobster trap pictured here is just for show. But who’s to say that you can’t bring along a portable baby-safe crib that could potentially double as the same thing?
Or, if you want, you can be a little more macabre and put your baby in a lobster pot (that’s right, an actual lobster cooking pot), as shown on the Today Show here. Either way, the effect will be darling. And if you’re still feeling like the idea of dressing your baby as something that’s usually stove-bound is a little much, just relax and think of the ever-charming Sebastian the Crab from Disney’s The Little Mermaid — who managed to outsmart Chef Louie, and avoid becoming dinner.
Your baby as popcorn
Okay, so maybe you’re the one who technically just popped, but this is still a great costume idea for a little kernel who’s just come to fruition. The Today Show offered some great tips to DIY this look, but you can also find baby popcorn costumes on Etsy and other such sites.
There’s no doubt, though, that the real popcorn pieces on the head (as seen in this picture) make all the difference. If you can’t find a popcorn-bag costume meant to go over a baby carrier, it doesn’t appear to be too difficult to DIY. All you’d need is red and white felt and a hot glue gun. If you want to go all out, you can craft the logo of your fave brand — Orville Redenbacher, perhaps? So cute, so simple, and nothing beats the vintage look of a box of good old-fashioned movie popcorn. All eyes will certainly be “popping” with adoration.
Your baby as a newly-hatched chicken out of an egg
Which came first — the chicken or the egg? It’s an age-old philosophical question, and one that’s not likely ever to be answered to anyone’s satisfaction. But one thing’s for sure: your own little baby did just hatch, so to speak. That’s why the idea of of your little one dressed up as a chick is so fitting (and so cute).
If you like, you can even use the egg, itself, as part of the costume — there are many such options out there. Or you can don a chicken costume yourself, and simply find a large basket in which to tote your egg-costumed little one. Either way, the symbolism will be clear, and so will the cuteness. It may sound more Easter than Halloween, but look at it this way: it’ll at least put a completely new spin on the saying, “trick or tweet treat.”
