Sarah Hyland Names Her Favorite Drugstore Moisturizer
"Your hair looks magnificent."
It's the first thing Sarah Hyland says to me over our Zoom call. Sarah Hyland thinks my chaotically air-dried curls look magnificent. That confidence boost is going to last me at least a week. But we're not here to talk about hair. We are here to talk about confidence, however, and skin care. (Though I'm determined to ask about her own magnificent curls before I hit the Leave Meeting button.)
I'm surprised when Hyland tells me, although she recently just turned 30, that firmness is already a top skin priority for her. "Of course I'm already concerned about it. I'm an actress," she reminds me, though I don't need reminding. I loved her as Haley Dunphy on Modern Family, which aired its series finale last April. Throughout the nearly 11 years she was filming episodes, Hyland was also posting candid updates about her struggle with kidney disease and the side effects of treatment, which may account for her concerns about firmness more than aging.
"I've been put on a lot of medications like prednisone, which makes your face get larger — they call it moon face. It's horrible," she tells Allure. "I lose and gain weight so fast. So that elasticity in your skin is just stretched out all the time from going back and forth."
Hyland has been able to look to Olay to address her skin concerns and that coupled with her strength and resilience makes her the perfect partner for the brand's ongoing #FaceAnything campaign. She's also the perfect person to talk about the new Olay Regenerist Collagen Peptide24 collection, launching at Walgreens this month. It includes a cleanser, serum, an eye cream, and Hyland's favorite, the Collagen Peptide24 Moisturizer.
"It's Olay's highest concentration of peptides," Hyland tells me before professing her undying passion for moisturizer in general. "I just love moisturizer. I love moisturizer so much. I drink a lot of water — almost a gallon, if not a gallon a day — so you would think that my skin would feel moisturized, but somehow it doesn't. Every time I put on moisturizer in the morning or at night, it's just like my skin's a thirsty bitch. She's just like, Give me more moisturizer. This feels amazing."
Speaking of feeling amazing, Hyland is all about making her skin-care experience as enjoyable — and effective — as possible. "[The Collagen Peptide24 collection is] formulated to penetrate into your skin's surface, but I just feel that by using a beauty roller it penetrates even more. And it feels like you're giving your face a massage," Hyland says, shouting-out Nurse Jamie's Uplift Massaging Beauty Roller. Another little enhancement she enjoys is chilled undereye patches. "I keep those in the fridge next to the salsa."
At this point, I was like, if we're going to talk about salsa, we can definitely talk about hair. So I had to ask her what she's been doing to bring out the best in her curls. Her go-to products: In Common Magic Myst (she really appreciates the heat and UV protection it provides) and DevaCurl Supercream Coconut Curl Styler. "I only put those two products in my hair and scrunch, and then I use a diffuser," she tells me. When I ask her if she ever air-dries, she's more or less aghast. "Oh god, no. Because then I have no idea what's going to happen."
Hyland's curls have been a target for cruel commenters on social media, as has her treatment-related weight fluctuation. But no matter what they say about how she looks, her confidence comes from an untouchable place: "Knowing your truth," she says. "It really doesn't matter what anybody else says. Of course, it's going to hurt, but let it affect you for five minutes, maybe 15 if it's a really, really, really hurtful comment. But then just try to take a step back, look at the big picture, and just be confident and stand solid in your truth."
