17 A-List Celebrity Parents Who Can't Seem to Impress Their Kids

Dwayne Johnson

Most kids would probably brag to their friends if their dad played the character Maui in Disney’s Moana, but not Johnson’s four-year-old daughter Jasmine. The star, who is also dad to Simone, 18, and Tiana Gia, 1, told PEOPLE that he recently watched the 2016 animated film with his daughter and was excited to tell her that he voiced the popular demigod. “I said, ‘You know, that’s Daddy’s voice, and I’m going to show you,’” said Johnson. “Maui starts singing, and I then start singing, and within 10 seconds she’s trying to put a pillow over my mouth and says, ‘You’re ruining the song.’” Johnson revealed that this wasn’t the first time his daughters weren’t impressed by his celebrity status. “Simone went to a Jingle Ball concert a few years back and had met all the artists. She came back to the house and said it was amazing and was like, ‘I’ve never been around anybody famous before.’ And I’m like, ‘No one, you sure?’” Nice try dad, maybe next time.

Kristen Bell

Bell might voice fan-favorite Anna in Frozen, but the star’s children couldn’t care less. “[My kids] do not like to discuss the fact that I’m part of the cartoon,” she told InStyle. “They think it’s a tiny bit cool but really see it as a story they digested as their own, and me getting involved and knowing about it kind of messes it up for them. So, no cool points for Mom as Anna.”

John Legend

The Grammy winner’s smooth, soulful voice has attracted millions of loyal fans around the world — but not 2-year-old daughter Luna, who isn’t afraid to critique her famous dad’s vocal chops. In July 2018, Legend’s wife Chrissy Teigen shared a hilarious video of Luna trying to get her father to stop singing during a warm-up. “No! No! No!” the tiny tot screamed in the clip, pushing on Legend’s legs as he practiced his scales.

Mark Hoppus

When the Blink-182 singer takes the stage, he’s usually considered one of the coolest guys around … except in the eyes of his son. “My son was telling me at one point about not being cool and I was like, ‘What are you talking about? I play in a rock band. I’m cool,'” Hoppus told PEOPLE. “And he said, ‘Yeah, you’re ‘guy in a band’ cool, but you’re not like cool-cool.'” To be fair, Hoppus’ 15-year-old son, Jack, often attends Blink concerts. “I think my son likes what I do, but at the same time he kind of rolls his eyes at me and thinks I’m a lame dad,” Hoppus joked.

Chris Pratt

He may have action-packed roles in franchises like Guardians of the Galaxy and Jurassic World, but Pratt just can’t convince his 5-year-old son, Jack, that he’s the real deal. “He really couldn’t care less,” the actor said of Jack’s opinion of his career on The Graham Norton Show. “He went to Universal the other day — Universal Studios in L.A. theme park, had a good time, and he came back and he said, ‘Hey dad, guess what? Today, I saw the real Owen.’ Because there’s this guy at Universal who dresses up like my character from [Jurassic World] and the dinosaurs come out.”

Mark Wahlberg

The actor’s impressive “dad bod” may be making the world’s collective jaw drop, but his daughters — Grace Margaret, 8, and Ella Rae, 14 — couldn’t care less about their father’s physical transformation or strict workout schedule. “My daughters get very annoyed by the [shirtless] pictures,” Wahlberg told host Ellen DeGeneres. “I get, ‘Dad, put a shirt on’ all the time, even when I have a shirt on. If I have one shirt on, they’ll say, ‘Put another shirt on.'”

CHRIS HEMSWORTH

Hemsworth might currently be “father of the year” for encouraging his kids to watch his film, Thor: Ragnarok, but the actor previously told E! News his children were “wildly unimpressed” whenever they’d visit him on set of the action sequel. “They were like, ‘This is so boring! We thought you fought monsters for a living and you don’t. You just pretend, and so we’re going to wreck stuff,'” he said. “And that’s what they did. They ran around and broke things.” Hemsworth contined, admitting: “If they see the movie and they see all the special effects, which make me look cool, then I’m the hero. But once they saw behind the curtain, it ruined it.”

BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN

“We had our kids late, I was 40 when our first son was born, and they showed a healthy disinterest in our work over all the years,” The Boss told the New York Times of his three children, Evan James, 27, Jessica Rae, 25, and Samuel Ryan, 23 and their affection (or lack thereof) for their dad’s music. “They had their own musical heroes, they had their own music they were interested in. They’d be pretty blank-faced if someone mentioned a song title of mine.”

“We actually showed her Step Up for the first time. We were like, ‘This is really cool! It’s got dancing. She’s going to love it!’ ” the Magic Mike star told Jimmy Kimmel of showing daughter Everly his and Jenna Dewan’s 2006 film. “Within 10 seconds, she was like, ‘Can I watch a real movie? AMY ADAMS

“She doesn’t think of me as an actress at all,” Adams told Graham Norton of daughter Aviana back in 2016. “She makes fun of me for it. When I FaceTime her, she’s like, ‘Oh my God! It’s Amy Adams!’ She’s 6 years old by the way. She’s pretty level-headed.”

“I try to tell them [how cool I am],” Damon joked to Entertainment Tonight of proving his star power to his family at home. “My wife doesn’t really even get that either. But that’s alright. I’ll keep them around.”

IDRIS ELBA

The world may view Elba as the epitome of flawlessness, but the The Dark Tower actor admitted on The Tonight Show that his teenaged daughter, Isan, doesn’t feel the same way. “She loves me, but she tells me to calm down a little bit. She just thinks I try to be cool all the time,” Elba told host Jimmy Fallon. “And I’m like, ‘I am cool.’ She’s always trying to quiz me on rappers, and I don’t know who’s who anymore.”

CHRIS ROCK

Believe it or not: Rock’s kids don’t think the legendary comedian is funny — so much so that they’re worried about their futures. “My kids think I’m so unfunny they’re like, ‘Is there enough money saved up for college?'” he previously told David Letterman. “‘Because at some point, people are gonna realize you’re not funny.’ “

ANGELINA JOLIE

As she recorded vocals for her role in 2011’s Kung Fu Panda 2, Jolie was given honest feedback by her kids in the studio. “They’ll sit in a room and say, ‘That’s just not funny,'” Jolie revealed. Young scrutiny, she says, “will keep you competitive, even if they think [her costar] Jack Black is always cooler than Mom.”

WILL SMITH

He may have hung out with Kanye West and Calvin Harris, but the actor maintains that kids Willow and Jaden don’t consider their famous dad to be cool. “It’s so crazy because your kids always think everything is brand new and they’re doing things for the first time, so at home I’m not cool at all,” Smith told Capital FM. “Daddy is not cool at all, I mean I go out in the street and I’m kind of a cool dude but not in my house.”

JAMES VAN DER BEEK

When he asked his daughter, Annabel, what she saw as the pair stood in front one of his billboards for What Would Diplo Do?, the toddler turned her attention to something else. “Tough to impress a 3 year-old with your #WWDD billboard when it’s next to one for Cars 3,” Van Der Beek wrote on Instagram.

ADAM SANDLER

During an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Sandler revealed that after much pleading from his daughters, the comedian finally showed them his movies. “I’ll put them on,” Sandler explained. “Because they beg to see them. They’re like, ‘Please, it’s not fair! Let me watch your movies. Those people always yell things at you on the street. I don’t know what the heck they’re talking about.’ So I show them the movies — they demand this — and they get, every time, I’d say about 20 minutes in, and then I see them tuning out, and then I hear them. They’re nervous to say it, but like, ‘Can we watch something else?’ “
