Kim Kardashian Posted a Throwback Photo of Her Favorite 7th-Grade Lipstick
If there's anything I love more than a good #tbt photo, it's a mystery. And Kim Kardashian West, bless her contoured heart, has given me a two-fer with the throwback-Thursday she posted to Instagram on, well, Thursday.
The photo shows an approximately 13-year-old Kardashian West sitting outside on a white folding chair against a shrubbery-topped wall. She's wearing a black skirt suit with white piping, platform heels, and sheer black pantyhose. Her long, dark-auburn hair is partially covering her face but allows her true-to-the-era brownish-red lipstick show.
"7th grade," the caption states, despite the "Grade 4" sign taped to the chair. (Perhaps Khloe Kardashian had been sitting there first?) "This was my go to lipstick. It’s gotta make a comeback." And then she says nothing else. She doesn't reveal which specific lipstick she so loyally went to in her middle school days, and honestly, how dare she? But I'll be damned if I can't figure it out.

I'm a year older than Kardashian West, so I was dabbling in the same '90s-as-hell shades of lipstick back then. (I also had a pretty sassy blazer collection myself, but that's for another day.) After taking a trip down Lipstick Memory Lane, I've narrowed her seventh-grade shade down to three possible colors.
My gut response was that she was wearing Clinique Almost Lipstick in Black Honey. Not only was Clinique a lot of girls' introduction to fancier-than-drugstore makeup back then, but Black Honey was as ubiquitous as a lipstick shade could be. But the fact that Kardashian West's lips look pretty pigmented and Black Honey's sheer formula looks quite purple-ish when layered for opacity made my mind wander over to a browner shade that was popular at the time, Bobbi Brown's Brownie. Both Brownie and Black Honey are still available, however, so neither needs to make a comeback.
Ultimately, my instincts tell me that Kardashian West is wearing one of the most iconic lipstick colors of the 1990s, Toast of New York by Revlon. The Super Lustrous Lipstick is exactly the color I think of when I picture the brown shades of that now-vintage time period, and it looks like it could definitely be what she's wearing in the photo. However, Toast of New York is still available, too. But this is Kim Kardashian West we're talking about — when's the last time she stopped by the drugstore for makeup? It's entirely possible she doesn't realize her old fave is right there waiting for her.
Regardless of which lipstick she was wearing back in the day, if she decided to launch her own KKW Beauty lipstick in a similar shade, I wouldn't be mad at her.
