Jennifer Garner Reveals Her 'Hilarious' Mother's Day Tradition with Her Kids: 'It's a Disaster'

As her kids get older, Jennifer Garner‘s beloved Mother’s Day tradition has gotten a little trickier to pull off.

“All my kids sit on my lap every Mother’s Day [for a photo],” says the actress, 47, who currently graces the cover of PEOPLE’s 2019 Beautiful Issue. “But they’re getting bigger and it’s hilarious.”

“It used to be that [Samuel Garner, 7, Seraphina Rose Elizabeth, 10, and Violet Anne, 13, her children with ex Ben Affleck] could fit, and now we just have to stack them and it’s a disaster,” she shares with a laugh.

But the kids still enjoy it, says Garner: “They’re like, ‘Mom when we’re 24, 21 and 18, we are sitting on your lap.’ And I’m like, ‘Great, I’ll keep my bone density up. That’s my part in this equation.’ “

Jennifer Garner Has a No-Fuss Approach to Beauty: “I’ve Showered! Don’t I Get a Gold Star?”

On April 24, Garner celebrated the holiday a little early by hosting Shutterfly and Baby2Baby‘s Mother’s Day event in Los Angeles, honoring over 30 mothers and children from low-income families in the area.

“These are families that I know,” says Garner, an artist ambassador for Save the Children. “I know the moms, I’ve been in their homes and I’ve seen what they’re up against every day. And Baby2Baby and Shutterfly graciously brought them down to celebrate.”

“Baby2Baby knows how to make this day special,” she continues. “They know how hard these moms work and they’re sending them home with necessities that will be game-changers.”

Back at home, Garner is relishing every minute with her own children, including a newly minted teenager.

“She seems so grown up and independent and in control of what she wants to do,” the 13 Going on 30 star says of Violet, who turned 13 in December. “She really has her stuff managed. I don’t say to her, ‘Have you done your homework?’ She’s on top of it.”

As for Garner’s Beautiful cover? The kids put it into perspective. “They were kind of like, ‘Why is this you?’ ” she says. “My son said, ‘This is ridiculous!’ “
