Elle Fanning's Red Carpet Pigtails Are Proof This Style Isn't Just for Kids

From ages two through six, my hair was in pigtails for what I'm estimating was nearly 50 percent of the time. The same probably goes for quite a few little girls, past and present. And if I'm being perfectly honest, I haven't worn my hair in pigtails since I was a little girl. But despite how popular the style is among the kindergarten set, that's not why I haven't tried them in adulthood; it's just that I'm absolutely terrible at doing my own hair in any way other than down. Elle Fanning's amazing hairstyle on the red carpet this weekend may have me giving pigtails another shot soon, though.

Fanning attended the premiere of her new film Galveston at the Deauville American Film Festival in France on Saturday, wearing a custom cream and yellow Miu Miu gown with a crystal bow at her waist. The bow theme continued in Fanning's hair, with baby blue ribbons at the base of low, tucked-under pigtails — but they were anything but babyish. The 20-year-old actor, who was given the festival's New Hollywood award, looked glamorous from head to toe; the pigtails made the look more elegant, not juvenile.

"For Elle's pigtails, we used a reference from an old photo she had of a 1950s hairstyle but updated the look to feel young, fresh, and modern," says stylist Jenda, who used a blow-dry cream followed by a hair oil to blow out her hair. (She recommends L'Oreal Paris Advanced Hairstyle Blow Dry It Thermal Smoother Cream and L'Oréal Paris Elvive Extraordinary Oil.) "After, I used loose, long elastic to secure the pigtails in place. I prefer to use this method instead of hair bands because I can cut the elastic to any length I need, and more importantly, I don’t need to move my hand while securing it in place."

After the elastic was wrapped around the base of Fanning's pigtails, Jenda secured the ribbons over the elastic. "We thought the baby blue would complement the dress and add a nice pop of color," Jenda tells Allure about the accessorizing choice she made with Fanning, who also wore all L'Oréal makeup. "Finally, I rolled the lengths of her pigtails, tucking and pinning them in with bobby pins. A final spray with Elnett hairspray and voilà — chic pigtails!"

It may not be an updo commonly seen on celebrities, but with Fanning proving pigtails can be so much more than just cutesy, I wouldn't be surprised if it becomes a red-carpet trend. At the very least, I know I'll give them a try again.
