Hilaria revealed in an emotional post on Thursday, April 4, that she was “most likely experiencing a miscarriage.”

“I always promised myself that if I were to get pregnant again, I would share the news with you guys pretty early, even if that means suffering a public loss,” she wrote on Instagram.

“The embryo has a heartbeat, but it isn’t strong, and the baby isn’t growing very much,” she explained. “So we wait — and this is hard. So much uncertainty… but the chances are very, very small that this is a viable pregnancy. I have complete confidence that my family and I will get through this, even if the journey is difficult.”

In an appearance on the Today show on Tuesday, Hilaria defended her decision to publicly reveal her news, insisting it would be “harder to do it silently.”

“You’re definitely not supposed to say anything before 12 weeks,” she said. “Some of that is because people are superstitious or that’s how they feel they’re gonna be stronger. A lot of it, for other people, is from fear. I don’t think that we have to live with such fear.”

The Living Clearly Method author, who married the Saturday Night Live actor, 61, in 2012, added, “For me, personally, it would be harder to do it silently. … Secrets are only scary when they’re secrets. Once you let the secret out, it’s not so scary anymore.”

Hilaria told Hoda Kotb Opens a New Window. and Savannah Guthrie Opens a New Window. that as a parent she needs to “accept the good and the bad.”

“It’s not just all diapers, blankets and hairbows,” she said. “We have to open our hearts and realize that there’s gonna be hard moments, too.”
