Connie Britton Says Nicole Kidman Gave Her the Best Parenting Hack
Traveling with little ones can be a real doozy, but according to actor Connie Britton, it doesn’t have to be. Britton, who adopted her son, Eyob, in 2011, stopped by Andy Cohen’s SiriusXM radio show on Wednesday to talk all things mom life, actor life and more. And who knew? Apparently, Connie Britton’s favorite parenting hack ever came from… Nicole Kidman.
“The best, best, best piece of advice that I ever got for traveling with a kid was from Nicole Kidman my first year in Nashville,” Britton admitted. “She said, ‘We have [traveling] down to a science because [the girls, Sunday Rose and Faith Margaret] have an iPad that they can only use’ — and Nicole’s pretty hardcore about technology with the kids — ‘they have an iPad they are only allowed to use on the plane.’”
Bribing your kids with gadgets to keep them quiet and entertained on long flights? We’re listening.
Britton continued to say that she implemented the airplane-only iPad rule in her household and that it’s worked like a charm every time she and her son need to travel long-distance.
“The only time he uses an iPad is [on the plane]… We don’t speak the entire plane ride,” she said. “Instead of giving him multiple doses of Benadryl, just do the iPad, and then it goes back in his backpack when we land.”
Celebrity parenting advice can often be hit or miss. After all, many of these celebs have access to luxuries the majority of us can’t (and never will be able to) afford. But now and then, a star comes through with something so simple and genius we can’t help but want to shout it from the rooftops. How did we not think about this trick until now?!
Cohen, who is expecting his first child via surrogate in just a few weeks, was just as excited about Kidman’s expert advice as we were. “I love it,” he said. “That’s the best idea.”
Of course, restricting kids’ iPad usage to flights may not be entirely practical for parents who find value in all the best interactive, educational apps available on tablets year-round. But that doesn’t mean you can’t tweak Kidman’s tip to fit your lifestyle. Maybe there’s a game your kids have been dying to play or a movie they can’t wait to watch. You can use these to your advantage by granting special plane privileges (within reason, of course). Your little ones will be tuning in and tuning out in no time.
